  1. Passive machines: machines are ones that engage in a submissive relationship with their surrounding environment. 

  2. Active machines: machines which have a functioning that is determined by an exterior flow of energy which they transform or transport.

  3. Reflexive machines: machines that use both energy and information in order to regulate themselves in the environment.
